 Caspian Sea accident

Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA, reported that an Iranian cargo ship was capsized in the Caspian Sea near Azerbaijan's Lankaran port on Friday. A distress signal from the same Iranian cargo ship near the port was received after it had been involved in the accident, stated the Azerbaijan State Maritime Administration. According to the IRNA reporting, the Shabahang ship crew pleaded out of panicky for help, saying, "we are sinking, we are sinking,". The Shabahang ship carrying a shipment of tiles, was enroute to Makhachkala, in Russia, from Anzali port in Iran, crashed in an area about 23 miles off the port of Astara, in Azerbaijan. 9 Indian crew members were released by Iran from Panamanian-flagged tanker. Jalil Islami, the Deputy head of Iran ports and Maritime organisation, told IRNA, that the Shabahang sank as water began to fill the ship, after the crash. The rescue operation conducted by the country’s coast guard and two Azerbaijan helicopters resulted in the safe rescue of all the nine crew members, out of which seven were Iranians and two were Indians, still on board the vessel. Full details on the cause of the accident are not yet known.
